She Blinded Me With Dogma

. . . with apologies to Thomas Dolby.

These observations from Joe Scarborough’s Twitter feed earlier this morning. . .

For those who don’t understand King/Weiner debate, here are the facts….

1. You need 218 votes to pass a bill under regular order in the House of Representatives.

2. Pelosi had over 250 votes to pass the 9/11 bill to help NY firefighters and cops.

3. Pelosi and Democrats chose to bring up the bill in a way that would require a 2/3rds vote, effectively killing the bill.

4. This procedure is called a “suspension” vote and is for non-controversial measures like naming post offices.

5. Pelosi could have ruled Republican amendments out of order and still taken the majority-wins vote.

6. If Anthony Weiner wanted to pass the bill, he would have had more luck pressuring Pelosi than screaming at King.

I know many rabid ideologues don’t let facts get in the way, but House leaders chose to kill a 9/11 relief bill they could have passed.

Why am I still surprised that rabid ideologues are so blinded by dogma? To them, facts don’t matter.

I’ve been attacked by the far left and far right today. I feel sorry for those who are blinded by dogma.

For those who haven’t seen it, this is the screaming/debate Scarborough refers.

Obama finding out who his friends are

A nice take in the NYT on the ever-morphing class of political pundits in general, and their reaction to President Obama’s speech on the BP spill in particular.

Perhaps it’s time for the President to stop worrying so much about being a consensus-builder, and move forward in the confidence that the better half of the American conscience will follow. Sort of like being “the decider,” except this one actually reads newspapers and uses the interwebs.

Whatever direction Obama goes, this could be a critical point in his presidency – akin to when Clinton moved beyond the health care debacle of his first term.

His election was the first shot in the Tea Party Revolution. But Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown (R) is turning out to be – gasp! – a moderate!

Ummm, yeah. Kind of.

Read the dirty details here! Somewhere, Phylis Schlafly is clubbing a baby seal in heaven, probably with a depleted uranium rod.

Brown even gets what must be regarded as the “Kiss of Death Quote” from Charles Schumer!

Senator Charles E. Schumer, Democrat of New York, said he and his staff were recently invited to a Friday afternoon “happy hour” on the terrace of Mr. Brown’s office.

“If you had to pick from a handful of Republicans who you can work with and who will be predisposed to do something together,” Mr. Schumer said. “He is one of them.” (more…)

We got both kinds o’ tax music: country…AND western

A good read here from Newsweek’s Robert Samuelson who, at the end of the day, is always a no-frills choice for some high-fiber economic insight.

The money quote, which really frames things nicely: (more…)

School House Rock Gone Wrong

Bet you wished you paid more attention in Civic’s class now don’t you. If the healthcare reform bill hasn’t shown you how ridiculous the legislative process is, nothing will.

They never did a School House Rock song about this. “I’m just a bill, I’m only a bill. And I’m sitting here . . .Oh fuck it. Can somebody get me a drink and a couple hookers?”

Give all the legislative hurdles the GOP has placed in front of this bill, how can you blame the Democrats for using the same set of rules to their advantage? According to parliamentary specialist Thomas Mann, both parties have used the self-executing rules over 80 times since 2005. (BTW, “Parliamentary Specialist” ranks only above “Circus Freak” and “Senior Road Kill Engineer” on the list of jobs that will get you laid.)

A good take on the process is here.

Of course, when used by the other guy it’s “an affront to the Constitution”. When it used by you, it’s “an effective way to pass legislation.” You can’t swing a dead hypocrite in Washington right now without hitting, well, another hypocrite. (more…)

Why It’s Not Working

Here is an excellent interview with Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh (D). In it, Bayh expands on his New York Times essay published a few days after his surprise retirement announcement. The essay gave a detailed critique of the Senate and modern politics. It’s worth a read.

Our First Hypocrite – J.D. Hayworth

Former Arizona Congressman and Republican Senate Candidate J.D. Hayworth wins CZ’s first entry on Hypocrites Corner! We’ve already notified his campaign so they may use it in their marketing materials.

Hayworth, as a conservative radio talk show host (is that redundant?), made comments in January calling on President Obama to personally produce a birth certificate instead of relying on the State of Hawaii to do so. I think O got right on that. (more…)
